Skwentna's premier fishing lodge — where the wild Kuskokwim River runs through your front door and every cast tells a story.
McDougall Lodge sits where the Kuskokwim River — the fourth longest in Alaska — carves its way through untouched wilderness near Skwentna. For generations, this stretch has drawn anglers seeking the thrill of trophy salmon in water so clear you can count every pebble on the riverbed.
We are not a resort. We are a working fishing lodge — a place where the morning bell rings with the sound of drifting skiffs, where breakfast is shared over stories of yesterday's catch, and where the only traffic jam is a moose crossing the gravel road at dusk.
Our family has called Skwentna home for decades. We know every bend, every riffle, every holding pool where a 50-pound King waits. When you stay with us, you don't just visit the river — you learn its language.
From drift-boat salmon drifts to backcountry bear viewing, every day on the river is different.
Guided drift-boat trips through prime King, Sockeye, and Chinook holding water. Our guides know the river's secrets — from the deep pools where giants wait to the shallow runs where the fish run thick in July.
No boat? No problem. Wade the eddies and backwaters from the lodge's doorstep. Our guides set you up on the right spot with the right gear — and the right presentation for the run you're targeting.
Watch brown bears work the falls at dawn — a spectacle that needs no introduction. We run safe, respectful wildlife excursions with experienced guides who know how to read the river and the animals that depend on it.
Multi-day bush plane trips to remote camps accessible only by floatplane or foot. Camp under endless summer skies, fish untouched stretches of river, and sleep where the only light comes from the aurora.
Farm-to-table doesn't apply here — river-to-table does. Fresh-caught salmon, game from the bush, and home-baked goods prepared daily. Every meal is an event around the lodge's communal table.
We coordinate floatplane transfers from Anchorage or Bethel to remote fishing camps. Full packages include flights, guiding, meals, and gear — so you land, cast, and forget the world behind you.
Three private cabins, each with river views, wood-burning stoves, and everything you need to unplug and cast again at dawn.
Sleeps 2 · 1 Queen Bed · Private Deck
Our flagship cabin faces directly onto the Kuskokwim. Wake to the sound of drifting boats and fish jumping in the early light. Wood stove, compact kitchen, and heated floors.
Sleeps 4 · 2 Queen Beds · Private Deck
Set slightly back among the spruce, this cabin offers privacy and the occasional bear visit at dusk. Two queens make it ideal for couples or small families. Full kitchen and wood stove.
Sleeps 2 · 1 King Bed · Hot Tub
Our most secluded cabin, perched on a bluff above the river. Features a king bed, outdoor hot tub, and the best sunset views in Skwentna. For those who want to end the day exactly right.
Your home base between casts. The main lodge features a great room with floor-to-ceiling river views, a stone fireplace, a full commercial kitchen, and a gear-cleaning station with rinse sinks and drying rooms. Evenings are for stories around the fire — no phones, no rush, just the river talking.
At 700 miles, the Kuskokwim is Alaska's fourth-longest river and one of its most productive salmon arteries. It runs through the heart of the Alaskan interior — past village after village, through floodplain forests and open tundra — before spilling into the Bering Sea.
Skwentna sits roughly midway, where the river has carved a deep, fast channel perfect for drift-boat fishing. In June and July, King salmon run so thick you can hear them hit the net from the bank. By August, Sockeye turn the river red with color.
Unlike some Alaskan fishing destinations, the Kuskokwim sees fewer anglers per mile of river. That means more water to yourself, bigger fish, and a wilderness experience that hasn't been commodified into oblivion.
Jun–Jul · Up to 60 lbs · The trophy

"We came for the King salmon and left with something we didn't know we were looking for. The river at dawn, the fire at night, the people who treat you like family. McDougall Lodge isn't a vacation — it's a homecoming."
"First time fly-fishing for salmon and I hooked a 42-pounder on my second cast. The guide didn't even blink — just handed me the net and said 'don't drop it now.' That's the energy here. Everyone's been there, everyone's got a story, and nobody's impressed by anything."
"Brought my dad here for his 60th birthday. He'd been dreaming about this trip for years. Watching him land a King on the drift boat while the whole family cheered from the bank — that's the memory we're keeping. Thank you for making it real."
